WINDOW TINT LAWS
Navigating window tint regulations in the D.M.V. area can be tricky, as crossing a state line can mean the difference between a compliant ride and a costly ticket. While all three jurisdictions prohibit metallic or mirrored “limo” style reflections, the allowable darkness—measured in Visible Light Transmission (VLT)—varies significantly. Maryland is generally considered the “sweet spot” for enthusiasts, allowing a uniform 35% VLT on all side and rear windows for sedans (SUVs/Trucks can go darker on the rear).
Virginia and D.C. are notably stricter, particularly for front windows. Virginia law requires front side windows to allow 50% of light in, while rear windows on sedans are capped at 35% (SUVs usually have no limit on rear glass). Washington, D.C. is the most restrictive, requiring 70% VLT on front side windows—which is essentially clear factory glass—and 50% VLT for rear windows on passenger cars. Because enforcement is strict and regulations can change, we always recommend choosing a film that keeps you compliant where your vehicle is registered.
